FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS We have listed below several of the most common questions that we get asked about the Gold4Good Appeal and Silver Appeal. We hope that you find these answers useful. If however you have any further questions or need more information, please do not hesitate to contact us. Why collect old gold and silver jewellery ? Firstly, there's lots of it out there waiting to be collected in. Gold and silver jewellery are extremely popular in the UK. Each year several million pieces of gold and silver jewellery are sold by jeweller's shops, gift shops, catalogues, TV shopping channels, and online. A lot of jewellery is set with gemstones, or beads or enamalled, but it still contains precious metal which can be recycled at the end of its useful life. A lot of gold jewellery is very lightweight, due to the high cost of gold, and although the items are well made, they will break or dent easily with wear. These broken, lightweight items are then useless but are often not sold for scrap. Instead they are kept in the jewellery box or at the back of a drawer and may be donated to your Gold4Good Appeal. Similarly silver jewellery will look fabulous when new, but over time will tarnish, break, loose stones or just go out of fashion. For your Gold4Good Appeal and Silver Appeal, any type of gold or silver jewellery, in any condition and any quantity will be valuable. The value is in the metal itself and both gold and silver are 100% recyclable so condition doesn't matter. By collecting as much unwanted gold and silver as possible in your campaign from supporters, friends and neighbours, you will raise thousands of pounds for your cause. Will people donate their old gold jewellery ? Simply yes ! Most people will have some old gold jewellery and will be pleased to donate it to your good cause. We are not asking for their heavy gold bracelets, or rings, but instead, unmatched earrings, lightweight broken necklaces and bracelets, old rings, charms and so on, items which are tangled, broken, with stones out and discoloured. In the current economic climate, where people are tightening their belts, people will appreciate being asked to help by donating something that has value to your campaign rather than cash, and which they have and is now useless to them. How much money can we earn ? We will pay a minimum of £150 for every 50 grams of actual 9 carat gold that you collect and a campaign should achieve several hundred grams. ( remember, prices vary daily in line with world gold prices) We pay for every single gram of actual gold collected, and there are no limits. The more that you collect, the more we will pay you. We will pay a minimum of £100 for every kilogram of actual silver that you collect. There are no minimum requirements, and no limits .We will pay you for every single gram of silver that you collect.( remember, prices vary daily in line with world silver prices) When you consider that a small piece of gold jewellery can weigh between a half gram to one gram, and that many people have several broken items that they will be happy to donate to your campaign, your Gold4Good Appeal Collection will soon add up to several hundred grams. If you can organise a campaign which attracts your local press or radio station who advertise the Gold4Good Appeal and urges people to ' sort out their single gold earrings ' and donate it to your cause, you will be amazed at how much gold you collect and how much money you can earn for your cause. Gold is one of the earth's precious metals and has many important uses in industry as well as being used in jewellery. It is an excellent conductor of electricity and so is used in many electrical components. Gold is also one of the most valuable investment metals, being recognised the world over as a store of wealth. The mining and extraction of gold as it occurs naturally is expensive and harmful to the natural environment. On average it takes one tonne of ore in a gold mine to produce just 5 grams of gold. By recycling and refining pure gold from our old jewellery makes sense and helps save our precious environment.Silver, similarly has many industrial uses as well as being used for jewellery. Not everything collected will be actual gold or silver. A collection of gold or silver will inevitably contain lots of gemstones - such as amethyst, garnet, dark sapphires, and cubic zirconias and crystals. There will probably be some gold or silver plated jewellery in there as well. This will be done by a third party bullion refinery and will take between 5/7 working days.
